Inferno Protocol Patch Notes
Official Steam changes that shaped the Early Access maze — v0.58, September performance fixes, v0.57 QoL, Worm Teleporter, caves, creatures, crafting, and comms.
This page is a reading copy of Tektonic Interactive’s Steam announcements from the demo year through Early Access. It is not a legal changelog and it does not replace the in-game news. When a new post lands, we fold it in. Until then, these are the patches that explain why melee feels heavy, why a rat can grab you, and why your fire barrel dies in rain.
Use this with combat, crafting, co-op, settings, and the Worm Teleporter guide. The roadmap covers what is still promised rather than what already shipped. For price and Mixed-review context, read the Early Access buyer guide.
11 September 2026 — v0.58 Performance Update
The latest patch focused on performance and stability improvements:
- Performance optimizations across all layers. The game now runs more smoothly in Junkyard, Jungle, and Swamp, with reduced frame drops in combat-heavy areas.
- Memory usage improvements. Reduced memory footprint during extended play sessions, particularly when moving between layers.
- Loading time reductions. Faster transitions between interiors and layer gates.
- Stability fixes. General crash fixes and stability improvements across all layers.
This update is a quality-of-life pass focused on making the Early Access experience more polished. If you were experiencing frame drops, memory issues, or long loading screens, this patch addressed those areas.
6 September 2026 — v0.57 Recipe and Quality Update
The latest patch delivered several quality-of-life improvements:
- Recipe visibility at mixer station. You can now see recipes directly at the mixer station without needing to open additional menus.
- Water-based mark cleaning. You can now clean placed marks by pouring water on them. Look at marks with bottles to activate this option.
- Ammo prioritization with R key. You can now access ammunition for weapons that use various bullet types in your inventory and switch or prioritize it with the R key.
- Metal scrap conversion adjusted. Converting Metal Scrap to Metal Ore at the smelter now requires 10 metal scrap (increased from previous amount).
- Bunker 1 interior fixed. Fixed issues occurring in the Bunker 1 interior that could trap players.
This update focuses on crafting quality of life and inventory management, making resource conversion and recipe learning more intuitive.
4 September 2026 — QoL and Bug Fix Update
The second September patch delivered quality-of-life improvements:
- Gamepad input icons improved for better visibility during QTEs and menus.
- Worm Teleporter UI fixed — the interface for this traversal tool now displays correctly.
- Injecting a friend now correctly gives them an empty injector afterward.
- Object and collision issues fixed in the Junkyard layer.
- New /imstuck command added. Typing
/imstuckin text chat invokes the help system for players stuck in geometry or behind closed layer gates. - General stability improvements across all layers.
If you were having trouble with the Worm Teleporter interface, gamepad prompts, or becoming trapped, this patch addressed those directly. The /imstuck command was a missing emergency escape that players had requested since Early Access launch.
2 September 2026 — Hotfix Update
The first post-launch hotfix landed 2 September 2026 with targeted fixes:
- Swamp layer: Fixed the exit from the Swamp layer. Fixed a loot issue in the Swamp layer.
- Caves: Fixed issues occurring at the cave interior exit. Jungle caves are now fully traversable.
- Controls / UI: Gamepad input icons improved; Worm Teleporter UI fixed.
- Injectors: Fixed an issue where injecting a friend would not give them an empty injector afterward.
- Junkyard layer: Fixed object and collision issues throughout the layer.
This hotfix also addressed early player reports of caves not functioning properly in the Jungle layer.
29 August 2026 — Launch-week hotfix
The first post-launch patch landed 29 August 2026. Fixed issues:
- Wooden and Stone arrows could not be crafted — now craftable.
- NPC voice lines for several characters were incorrect.
- Loot quantities rebalanced across all layers.
- Sound issues in the new sewer interior fixed.
- Creature spawn rates rebalanced.
- An issue with doors blocking player movement resolved.
If you lost arrows in a quiver or heard silent NPCs, this patch addressed those directly.
Launch-week snapshot — late August 2026
Steam Early Access is live. The demo is gone. Introductory pricing on the US store sat at $10.79 (20% off $13.49) through 7 September 2026 — confirm live regional pricing on Steam. Launch-week review scores sat in Mixed territory on a small sample (roughly low-sixties percent positive). Treat the live Steam widget as truth; this wiki will not freeze a score that moves every hour. Player reports already echo demo-era themes: lobby friction, occasional floor falls, and love for the maze fantasy. Those are Early Access signals, not a finished report card.
28 August 2026 — Early Access, demo removed
Steam news: the demo was taken down around the Early Access window with a thank-you to players who reported bugs. The adventure continues in Early Access. If a friend is still looking for a free Prologue on the store, it is gone. Buy the Early Access build or wait.
Layer mechanics: generators and night gates
A key Early Access discovery: generators control layer gates. When generators are on, gates stay open and you can transit between layers freely. When generators are off, gates close — forcing you to wait for night or find alternative routes. This creates a day-night cycle mechanic where:
- Day: Generators on, gates open, free layer transit.
- Night: Generators off, gates closed, limited movement between layers.
This applies across Junkyard, Jungle, and Swamp layers. Understanding generator timing is essential for planning multi-layer expeditions.
19 August 2026 — date lock and demo sunset
Tektonic confirmed the 28 August date, thanked demo testers for implemented feedback, previewed an Early Access roadmap image, and said the demo would come down on 27 August (with a possible delay if demand existed). A launch trailer was described as in progress. Treat the image on Steam as the visual plan; our roadmap page translates it into text without pretending we have a pixel-perfect internal Gantt chart.
July 2026 — Demo Fix Update (comms and menus)
- Microphone selection for proximity chat.
- Proximity chat fixes.
- Walkie-talkie fixes.
- Quest list fixes.
- Screen type changeable from graphics settings.
- Emote key no longer moves you while organizing inventory.
If your co-op still sounds wrong, this is the patch that admitted voice was a bug surface. Re-select the mic. See settings.
July 2026 — Better Building
- Build usability: placed objects show facing direction; placement effects updated.
- Trash eater explodes if fed dynamite, grenades, etc.
- Brass knuckle effects and recipe errors corrected.
- Other players’ names visible again.
- Physics, ladder-exit stand-up, interior fall-through, stun stand-up, first-entry quests, Prologue ambient sound, localization.
Fall-through reports at Early Access suggest this class of bug can return. If you lose a stash through a floor, check Steam discussions and your last bed.
Combat Update — Better Hit Feedback
Melee overhaul: impact camera punch, heavier heavies, hitstop synced in multiplayer, swing trails, impact shockwaves. Zombies get locational and directional reactions, also synced. Staggering mid-swing cancels damage. Directional deaths. This is the patch that made combat worth a page instead of “left click until dead.”
4 June to 1 July 2026 — Major Demo Content Update
New weapons and items: brass knuckle, wrist watch (functional UI), leather flask empty/filled, wall torch, small scrap rack. New clothing: cowboy hat, loin cloth, leather shoes, round glasses, belt bag, Snatcher backpack. New enemy: Giant Rat with chase, attack, grab, roam. New interiors including sewers, trade rooms, and Jungle caves; some interiors occupied by day, empty at night.
New systems: cooking rebuilt for netcode (campfire and table; burnt/raw consequences); notebook with live sharing and synced notes (hidden in Prologue); NPC trade UI; quest hints; audio black boxes for story.
Gameplay: craft from chests/stashes; quick item use; quick merging by double-click; fire barrels lit by torch, extinguished by rain; teleport traps carry explosives; night vision visuals improved; bed / gamepad cancel; random ammo in looted guns; bear trap hold time down, no trigger while riding/climbing.
Multiplayer: item draw replication, hand IK, static-event leaks, subscriber exceptions, NPC pooling, notebook race conditions.
UI: ultrawide, scroll sensitivity, auto GPU detect, auto-exposure fix, localized QTE gamepad icons, welcome UI, text chat system messages, notification pass, crafting/building name filter.
Performance: pooling, torch rendering, tree LODs, shader preload, save-system leak, main-menu crash, network transform safety, grass, 100+ bug fixes. Prologue flow improved. Climbing and ladder sounds added. A preview note also named katana and shotgun among incoming weapons.
June 2026 — Next Fest demo live
Demo and Prologue during Steam Next Fest: 6-player co-op, syringe survival, shifting maze. Official line: memory is your map, marks are your guide. The getting started page is written for the Early Access continuation of that demo, not as a museum label.
January 2026 — teaser
Announcement teaser posted (YouTube ID IXuyd5UsfDc on the home page). Q1 2026 language in that post was later overtaken by the actual Early Access date in August. Believe the later Steam news.
How to read this during the next patch
If Tektonic posts “melee” or “stagger,” we update combat and weapons. If they post a new layer, we update navigation and the roadmap. If they post voice, we update co-op and settings. If they post a new traversal tool like the Worm Teleporter, we create a dedicated guide. Do not assume a demo-era fix still holds if a new post contradicts it. Early Access is allowed to regress; the job of this page is to notice.
